STAYING in touch with the residents and ensuring their problems are solved is the key in keeping communities within a neighbourhood together, said Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

“Nowadays the boundaries of communication is wider than before; people use Twitter, Facebook, SMS, e-mail and also call you,

“You have to learn to reply and deliver what is requested before you can win the hearts of the people,” he said, citing the recent rubbish collection issue as an example.

Happy group: Members from the Surau Al-Husna Community in Section 20 posing with their prize of a RM20,000 development grant.

Khalid who was speaking at the first Shah Alam Smart Community Award, praised Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan for a job well done in tackling the issue.

“The job of collecting rubbish used to be Alam Flora’s but now we have taken over and the responsibility is on us,

“We have to learn how to solve the problem and in doing so, we will get to know our customers better as well as learn from the earlier mistakes made,” he said.

The late rubbish collection started early last month after only 26 out of the 71 contractors were willing to extend their contracts for another two months.

Mohd Jaafar received a pat on the back for attending to residents promptly and going on the ground to ensure there were enough garbage trucks on duty collecting rubbish in the area.

During the prize-presentation ceremony, three outstanding residential areas were awarded cash prizes and development grants to assist them with their community projects for the year.

The first prize went to the Surau Al-Husna community whose cooking oil recycling project won the approval of the judges.

According to their chairman Mohd Takiyuddin Ibrahim, the project which started in 2005 among residents in Section 20, Batu Tiga, several government agencies and the MPP zone 7 had since managed to garner some RM30,000 in return. For their effort, the group of 18 members took home RM5,000 and a development grant of RM20,000.

Second place went to Taman Setia Warisan Residents Associa-tion who received RM3,000 and RM10,000 in development fund. Their project involved frequently organising activities for those living in the neighbourhood, to bring the community closer and allowing residents to get to know one another better.

The third place went to Jalan Sastera 8 and TTDI Jaya 11 Residents Association, headed by Shamsudin Jalil. They received RM2,000 and RM7,000 in development grant for adopting a plot of land and turning it into a community orchard.

Besides that, five other special awards were handed out at the ceremony namely the Special Social Award (Taman Subang Perdana 2 RT), the Special Economy Award (Bukit Jelutong Residents Association), the Special Environmental Award (Taman Alam Megah Jalan 28/18, 28/19 and 28/20 Residents Association) the Special Community Leadership Award (Section 20 Flats Welfare chairman Mohd Bakhtiar Kalam) and the Special MPP Chairman Award (MPP Zone 7 chairman Mohd Harris Abu Bakar).
